the katam is known as the trisula, the three fold jewel, or shiva’s trident. in hindu tradition, it is shiva’s favorite weapon and represents the three elementary aspects of creation, protection, and destruction. it is worn for protection, but also as a symbol of shiva’s wisdom. shiva is often referred to as the god of the yogis. self-controlled and celibate, he is responsible for change both in the form of death and destruction, and in the positive sense of destroying the ego, the false identification with form. destruction opens a path for a new creation of the universe, and the destruction associated with Shiva has great purifying power. as truth, goodness, and beauty, shiva represents the most essential goodness, protection, and the letting go of the world of form.
