nataraj, the cosmic dancer, is one of the many forms of shiva. his dance represents both the destruction and the creation of the universe, and reveals the cycles of death, birth, and rebirth. this dance of bliss is for the welfare of the world. in the form of nataraj, he gives guidance to his devotees within the "heart of consciousness." under his feet, shiva crushes the demon of ignorance, caused by forgetfulness. one hand stretches across his chest and points to the uplifted foot, indicating the release from earthly bondage. but the dance of nataraj is also a dance of creation. it scatters the ashes of the universe in a pattern that becomes the design of creation that follows destruction, and honors the dance of shiva and shakti. the dance of creation and transformation.
